Captain Michael E. McCormack

San Antonio, Texas

Captain Michael Edward McCormack of San Antonio, Texas, “fought the good fight, finished the race,” and now rests in the arms of his Maker. A devoted husband, father, educator, and servant-leader, Michael passed away at the age of 77 after a life lived with purpose and grace.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of 46 years, Joy McCormack, and their cherished daughter, Diana Lee McCormack, both of San Antonio. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lieutenant Colonel William Edward McCormack and Mary Elizabeth McCormack of Grand Prairie, Texas.

Michael and Joy were married on July 28, 1979, at Frazer United Methodist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Their love story spanned nearly five decades, and their greatest joy was their daughter, who was later baptized in the same church that witnessed their vows.

Born in Germany in 1948 to a military family, Michael was the eldest of three sons. His childhood was marked by travel and discovery, with family homes in San Antonio, Indianapolis, Okinawa, Fort Lee (VA), New York City, Germany, Kentucky, Fort Worth, and Seoul. A Boy Scout, track athlete, and salutatorian of his high school class, he carried a steady drive for excellence throughout his life. Fittingly, his own daughter was also born in Germany. A world traveler he showed the world to both his wife and daughter while stationed in Europe - visiting Spain, Munich, Egypt, Paris, Switzerland and witnessed the live reenactment of “The Passion” in Latin on the holy ground of Jerusalem.

Michael earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Texas, followed by three master’s degrees: a Master of Business Administration (MBA), a MSc in Administration, and a Master of Science. Ever the lifelong learner, he will be posthumously awarded a fourth degree in MEd in Adult and Higher Education in December 2025; Diana will accept the degree in his honor.

Teaching was one of Michael’s greatest callings. Over the years he inspired thousands of students across colleges, universities, and high schools. On weekends, he volunteered in prisons, teaching adults to read—work he undertook with quiet dignity and deep compassion.

Affectionately known as “Mr. Mike,” he co-founded the first Classical Ballet school in Wilson County with Diana to expand fine-arts opportunities in underserved communities. He helped bring 11 productions to the stage; Peter Pan and Dance of the Decades were among his favorites. He was the ultimate dance dad, cheering with pride from backstage and beyond. He laid the foundation for The Medina Ballet - an expansion he witnessed his daughter accomplish with all the learning and support she learned from her father.

Michael’s love of literature, computer science, music, and dance, and his ready sense of humor, touched every part of his life. Known for his dad-jokes, warm presence, and unwavering support for others, he challenged injustice and extended a helping hand wherever he went. One of his favorite reminders came from Carl J. Barger: “Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way.” He also kept a card in his wallet reading “Christ is your Master,” cleverly styled with the MasterCard logo; a small reflection of his faith, wit, and dedication.

Michael is, also, survived by his brothers and their families:
• Bruce Alan McCormack and wife Marilyn Jeanne Hodge McCormack of Fairfield, CA; their children
o Jeffrey Alan McCormack of Vacaville, CA
o Bridgette Elizabeth McCormack Berry and husband Stephen Berry of Midlothian, VA, and their children Alexis, Audrey, and Olivia
o Zachariah Edward McCormack and wife Shannon Irene Palacios McCormack of Fairfield, CA, and their children Brianna and Peyton, Trenton Royer and his wife
• Kevin Lee McCormack and wife Donna Lucille Fleming McCormack of Newnan, GA; their children
o Heather Michelle Fleming Rawlins and husband Jesse Clayton Rawlins of Newnan, GA, and their children Bryce, Addyson, and Khole
o Mary Elizabeth McCormack Cox and husband Cody Cox of Newnan, GA

A tapestry hanging in Michael’s office captured his guiding creed: “I shall pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore I can do, or any kindness I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” — Stephen Grellet

In Michael’s honor, the family invites you to choose a meaningful book from his wall-to-wall library, let its message enlighten you, and then pass it on; just as he did with his wisdom, kindness, and love. Captain Michael Edward McCormack’s life was a testament to service, education, faith, and love. He leaves an enduring legacy in his family, his students, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
