Leon Thomas

–

San Antonio, Texas

Leon Thomas, age 89, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2026. Born on July 10, 1936, in Louisville, Mississippi, Leon lived a life marked by service, dedication, faith, and love for his family.

He was the beloved son of the late Jerry Thomas and Alberta Thomas. Growing up, Leon was a devoted member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed singing in the choir and attending singing conventions throughout the region. He attended elementary and high school in Louisville and, upon graduation, enrolled at Arkansas Agricultural and Mechanical College (Arkansas A&M), before answering the call to serve his country in the United States Army.

On April 29, 1959, Leon married the love of his life, Edna Marie Hubbard, in San Antonio, Texas. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and devotion. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love, mutual respect, and unwavering partnership.

Raised with strong values and a determined spirit, Leon carried those qualities throughout his life and into his distinguished military career. He proudly served in the United States Army for 21 years, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. A veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Leon served his country with honor and distinction, earning the Bronze Star Medal for his exemplary service. His military service reflected the discipline, leadership, and commitment that would become hallmarks of his character. After completing his honorable military service, Leon began a second career with the United States Postal Service, where he worked faithfully for 20 years before retiring.

Leon’s commitment to serving others extended well beyond his professional career. He was a tireless advocate for his community and worked diligently alongside leaders within the City of San Antonio to ensure that residents of the city's East Side were treated fairly and equitably. His community recognized his efforts with the renaming of Kono Road to Leon Thomas Way, a lasting tribute that will stand as a reminder of his dedication and service for many years to come. He believed deeply in justice, opportunity, and giving a voice to those who might otherwise go unheard.

Leon enjoyed spending time with family, sharing stories from his life experiences, and offering guidance whenever it was needed. He was known for his quiet dignity, warm heart, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. He is survived by his loving daughter and son-in-law, Marcia Denean Thomas Mullins and Vincent Mullins; his beloved granddaughter, Brooklynn Denean Mullins; and a host of extended family members, friends, neighbors, former colleagues, and all who were blessed to know him.

Leon was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Edna Marie Thomas; his parents, Jerry Thomas and Alberta Thomas; and his brothers, Joe Griffin, Jean Griffin, and Jerry Thomas, Jr.

Though his physical presence will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him and in the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey. His example of service, compassion, and commitment will continue to inspire generations to come.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith."
— 2 Timothy 4:7
